The OnTrak HO Tribo is the culmination of research and the development of this particular hardware/software system. The basic premise is that by using Hertzian contact stress models, the contact pressures of full-scale railroad wheels on rails can be duplicated in a hand-operated device. The scaling of the measurement wheel dimensions and the applied normal forces produce proper contact stresses so that friction/creep behavior should respond similarly to full-scale rolling stock, even allowing for the range of loads encountered on different properties.It utilized an electric brake similar to an anti-skid system used on modern automobiles. Because that older design uses human power to push it along the track, it was not practical to measure forward velocity accurately enough to compare to wheel velocity thereby getting creep or percent slip. What it does is measure rotation with an encoder and catch the peak L/V at the moment of full sliding.
